Marrakech on a Budget

Marrakech is genuinely one of the more affordable major destinations to visit well — here's how to keep costs down without missing what makes it worth the trip.

Where the free (or nearly free) experiences are

  • Jemaa el-Fna — free to walk through and experience at any hour; see our full guide.
  • The souks — genuinely free to wander, whether or not you buy anything.
  • Koutoubia gardens — free, and a good rest stop.
  • Wandering the Kasbah & other quieter Medina streets — some of the best atmosphere in the city costs nothing at all.

Budget-friendly paid attractions

Not every sight needs visiting — pick two or three rather than all of them. El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs are both relatively inexpensive; save the pricier Majorelle Garden for the one splurge if your budget is tight.

Accommodation

Simple guesthouses and budget riads — often family-run, without a pool or extensive facilities — offer genuine Medina atmosphere for a fraction of a boutique riad's cost. See our where to stay guide for how riad and hotel pricing generally compares by area.

Food

Eating where locals eat is both the most authentic and the least expensive option. Small, no-frills restaurants a street or two back from the main tourist routes, and Jemaa el-Fna's food stalls (agree prices before ordering), both cost a fraction of Medina rooftop restaurants with a view.

Getting around

Walking covers most of the Medina for free. Petit taxis are cheap by most visitors' standards as long as you agree the fare upfront — see our travel guide — and are far less expensive than arranging private transfers for every trip.

Day trips on a budget

Shared group tours or scheduled buses (to Essaouira, for instance) cost noticeably less than private drivers. The Agafay Desert and Ourika Valley are both reachable on relatively inexpensive shared tours without sacrificing much of the experience.

Where not to cut corners

  • Arrival transfer on your first night — a slightly higher-cost riad-arranged transfer, at least for your first arrival, removes a real stress point that's worth paying for.
  • Bottled water — stick to it consistently rather than risking a stomach upset that costs you a day of your trip.

A simple budget-friendly structure

Follow our 2-day itinerary as a base, swapping the pricier attractions for the free alternatives above, and choosing a simple guesthouse over a boutique riad — the core experience holds up well either way.
